Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
- 500g plain flour (or malted flour)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 400ml buttermilk
Optional:
- 1 tsp honey (adds slight sweetness)
- Handful of sultanas or seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan).
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the buttermilk and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Knead very lightly (about 20–30 seconds) just until it comes together.
- Shape into a round loaf.
- Place onto a baking tray lined with parchment.
- Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf (traditional and helps it bake evenly).
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
Notes
- Do not over-knead; soda bread should be quick and rustic.
- If the dough feels too wet, add a little extra flour.
- Best eaten warm with butter.
- Keeps for 2 days and can be toasted.
